Dr. Hodza’s research focuses on two areas namely, drugs and human security, and gender and sexuality in higher education contexts. The underlying thrust in all his work is a commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice. Dr. Hodza interrogates traditional thinking and practices in illicit drug use interventions and in higher education. Below are brief descriptions of his current work at Monash South Africa:
- Higher Education: Under this theme, Dr. Hodza’s research focuses on the gendered and sexualised nature of university and student life. Student interactions and identities are often interpreted and experienced in ways that reinforce the binary construction of gender and sexuality at most institutions of higher learning. Using Butler’s notion of heteronormativity, his research argues for a rethinking of gender and sexuality on university campuses and society in general. He argues for the re-definition of these concepts so as to create possibilities for the development of gender and sexuality policies that are inclusive and responsive to non-normative practices including LGBT students.
- Drugs and human security: Dr. Hodza’s interest in this area of research is new and developing. He is particularly interested in the human security dimension of the use of illicit drugs in South Africa. Existing research portrays drug use as a criminological problem requiring an aggressive response from the criminal justice system (police, courts, and prisons). Hence, most approaches to responding to the problem of drugs rely on rapid raids and arrests at night. Dr. Hodza challenges this approach and argues that the human security perspective is a more productive approach because it moves beyond criminalisation and repression to addressing complex issues that aggravates problems of human insecurity such as social marginalisation, unemployment, hunger and homelessness.
