Philosophy and Ethics

Why Study Philosophy and Ethics?

In Greek, ‘Philosophy’ means ‘love of wisdom.’ Philosophers use the tools of logic and reason to analyse the ways in which we experience the world in which we live. By studying Philosophy and Ethics at Monash South Africa, you will acquire the internationally desirable skills of critical thinking, clear writing, and logical analysis. Different areas of philosophy are distinguished by the questions they ask. Do our senses accurately describe reality? What makes wrong actions wrong? How should we live? These are philosophical questions, and philosophy teaches the ways in which we should examine these questions. The kinds of questions philosophers ask are of interest to all of us because we all ask the same questions.

Situated within the Political, Philosophical and International Studies (PPI) programme in the Political, Sociological and Development Studies Cluster of the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences (FSHS), this Major offers you the opportunity to study 3,000 years of wisdom, from Greek and German philosophers to our own African sages. In the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences, we are committed to a participatory style of learning, in which you are provided with the tools and the opportunity to develop and express your own philosophical views.

This study area provides skills in reasoning and argument that are applicable in a wide variety of professions, as well as the opportunity to engage in a reflective appraisal of our place in the universe.
