    Why study Pasture Production and Management?

    Pasture Science is a scarce skill and very few tertiary institutions offer courses on this subject. Pasture production is a discipline that is interrelated to many disciplines, including soil science, weed science, livestock science and land reclamation and restoration.

    How will you benefit from studying this short learning programme?

    The purpose of this programme is to introduce students to the knowledge, tools and techniques needed to manage pastures for optimal sustainable production potential. This programme will provide an understanding of the interrelationships of pastures with other biophysical factors.

    After completion of this short learning programme you will be able to:

    • Evaluate the resources which are applicable to the pasture management system
    • Understand the interrelationships between soil, pasture, livestock and climate
    • Develop a strategy to address the management challenges
    • Optimise a management system
    • Select the correct pasture species for the area and management system
    • Identify agricultural products which are instrumental in the management and production of pastures
    • Apply the management principles of planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and coordinating resources in pasture management, reflecting on the financial implications
    • Conduct on-farm research to gather, analyse and interpret related information to adapt a pasture management strategy

      MSA Competency based short learning programme

      Who should attend

      Anybody with appropriate agricultural experience who has an interest in livestock production, agronomy, conservation agriculture and land reclamation. This programme will also be of value to agricultural retail company advisors, consultants in the agribusiness environment, farmers and regulators.

      Entry requirements
      • A National Senior Certificate or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification with agricultural experience. Recognition of prior learning based on relevant experience in agricultural industry will also be considered.
      • No previous experience required in pasture production and management

      About the course facilitator

      Dr Wayne Truter, Senior Lecturer and Researcher in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, University of Pretoria, holds a PhD with specialisation in Forage (Grasses/Legumes), Rangeland, Livestock and Land Reclamation Sciences.
