Prof Akanbi holds a Ph.D in Economics with specialisation in macro-econometric modelling from University of Pretoria. He is an academic with private sector experience in quantitative analysis.
He started his career with the Department of Economics, University of Pretoria in the capacity of researcher and lecturer. During this period, he also did his Ph.D internship at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Washington DC, focusing on debt sustainability among low-income countries.
After completing his Ph.D, he took the position of Senior Economist & Head of Research at Pan-African Investment & Research Services (PAIRS), Johannesburg. He later returned to academia and is currently a professor of Economics at the University of South Africa.
Prof Akanbi has published in international academic journals and participated in a number of consultancy research projects commissioned by government, private sector and the United Nations. He is currently a rated-researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
