Associate Professor Maria Damianova is also an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Social and Community Development (Psychology), Faculty of Humanities, Wits University. Maria completed her Ph.D at Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University Australia. Having been educated and trained in the Vygotsky-Luria socio-cultural framework in its country of origin, she has conducted and supervised various studies exploring the development of language and cognition. Her academic and research engagement is diverse, with a specific focus on neuropsychology.
She is a registered counselling and educational psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Maria is a founding member and the Chair of the Functional Neuropsychological Committee, which is hosted at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and was established with the purpose of facilitating a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and study of functional disorders. Her professional experience includes neuropsychological assessment and treatment of both children and adults in relation to a broad spectrum of dysfunctions including traumatic brain injuries, epilepsy, neurocognitive, movement and functional disorders.
