This module takes the fluid dynamic behaviour under varying flow conditions to advance level by analysing the design and performance requirements of fluid driven turbo machinery. It then analyse the dynamics of more complex flows in the form of compressible flow and unsteady turbulent flows. This complex dynamic behaviour of fluids requires the application of CFD for effective modelling and accurate analysis.
On completion of the module, students will be expected to be able to:
Understand the principles of turbo machinery
Perform calculations on centrifugal and axial flows
Understand the scientific analysis of compressible flows
Solve compressible flow problems by applying appropriate equations
Understand fundamental theory of CFD
Analyse and solve CFD related problems
Understand fundamental theory of turbulent flows
Apply modelling techniques in turbulent flows
Coursework assessment: 30%
In this module the complex dynamic behaviour of fluids is being analysed by making use of computational fluid dynamics techniques in order to assist engineers to accurately determine the fluid behaviour and solve fluid related engineering problems. There will be a combination of lectures, that will include interactive elements and assignments conducted on an individual basis. All outcomes will be assessed by means of class tests and a final examination.
