Synopsis

Equal access, for people with disabilities, to opportunities, services, and inclusive education have been key drivers for policy reform in South Africa. The early development of children is a particularly vulnerable area when children deal with any form of impairment. This module provides an overview of childhood disability in South Africa and an understanding of best practices for meeting special needs.

Outcomes

  • Identify various impairments that can impact childhood development
  • Identify the typical age of onset for various impairments
  • Explore the criteria for diagnosis of disabilities (e.g. DSM V)
  • Identify the support that exist for disabled children and their families in South Africa
  • Stipulate the criteria for inclusion in special education
  • Critically evaluate eligibility criteria for disabled children to access support
  • Describe best practice models in the treatment of children with special needs
  • Demonstrate the ability to make appropriate multi-disciplinary referrals

Assessment

Within semester/Formative assessment: 70%
Examination/Summative assessment: 30%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this module is 150 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The module requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
