The principal aim of this unit is to provide students with the opportunity to simulate starting and managing a business in the services sector.

In the simulation, students have the opportunity to integrate the principles from the different underlying units and apply business fundamentals in a simulated small business environment.


  • Explain the components of a service business environment including marketing, sales, human resources, capacity management, investments and service quality.
  • Determine the impact of business fundamentals, decision practices and financial implications for various decisions.
  • Solve business problems through team work.
  • Apply the business fundamentals in a simulated small service business environment.
  • Apply critical thinking and presentation skills in individual and group activities to demonstrate the ability to apply fundamental business principles to a simulated small service business.

Examination: 40%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 150 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
