Synopsis

Thorough assessment is required to design effective intervention strategies. This module provides an overview of assessment approaches and techniques with an emphasis on a strength-based approach. The earlier that challenges can be identified, the higher the likelihood of addressing challenges successfully. For this reason the early identification of problems are facilitated through the consideration of risk factors in a variety of settings. To obtain information from young people and families, assessment techniques within a child and youth care context form part of this module.  

Outcomes

  • Provide an overview of assessment approaches used in child and youth care
  • Differentiate between symptoms, signs and risk factors of childhood challenges
  • Define the concept of developmental assessment
  • Explain models used for identifying the needs of young people
  • Apply the resilience matrix to case examples to highlight strengths
  • Describe various assessment techniques that can be utilised with young people
  • Design a reporting structure to provide feedback on assessment

Assessment

Within semester/Formative assessment: 70%
Examination/Summative assessment: 30%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this module is 150 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The module requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
