Synopsis

The principal aim of this module is to provide students with a strong theoretical underpinning in lifespace work. Working in the immediate moment of the child and family will focus the student on the core of relational child and youth care. Aspects of therapeutic connections and attachment are addressed within the daily life of the young person. 

Outcomes

  • Describe what is understood as healthy family functioning
  • Critically analyse different approaches to providing holistic and therapeutic work to families
  • Apply frameworks for identifying family strengths
  • Demonstrate understanding of mediation during family breakdown
  • Describe ‘lifespace’ work and ‘lifespace crisis intervention’
  • Explain the different levels of relationship 
  • Develop a plan for relational practice

Assessment

Within semester/Formative assessment: 70%
Examination/Summative assessment: 30%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this module is 150 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The module requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
